Unity amongst believers

Unity amongst believers

Looking in the scriptures, we haven't changed much as a collective body from 2000 years ago. The search for Truth and accurate scripture has led us to have over 45,000 denominations (reference), differences in beliefs on baptism, the Holy Spirit and salvation.  There are parallels between today's universal Church and the early churches planted by the apostles.

In Romans 14, Paul encourages believers to cease arguing over what was 'clean' and 'unclean', and to show grace towards the personal convictions of our brothers and sisters in Christ. If our brother has a conviction that a certain food or behaviour is wrong, we hurt our relationship with them by continuing to do that behaviour in front of them.

In 1 Corinthians 1, Paul says again, " I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought...One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?" (1 Corinthians 1:10, 12-13)

God sent His son so that we may be united in Christ as one body (1 Corinthians 12:212-27). Instead, we find the Church falling into the same patterns as the early church, arguing and disagreeing over factors that Paul says should not dividing us.

May we as believers look to Jesus as the only Way, Truth and Life. May our eyes be so turned to Him as our saviour that we ignore that which aims to distract, divide and deunify. May we show grace towards others as they work to understand and apply God's word, just as God shows grace towards us. We are all part of the body of God, bringing different gifts, viewpoints and backgrounds. Together, we can be the full representation of God to the world around us.
